Stay childfriendly

The guest accommodation at Astrid Lindgren’s World has been built right next to the park. We offer several different accommodation options, in houses where the streets and surroundings are inspired by early 20th-century Vimmerby – ‘The Tiny Town’ – or in slightly smaller cottages with their own patios near the forest. If you are travelling with a caravan or motorhome, you can stay in our area with pitches just 150 metres from the main entrance to Astrid Lindgren’s World.

Book accommodation

Astrid Lindgren’s World is unlike anywhere else. Here, there is always joy, play and laughter. And Pippi Longstocking, Emil, Karlsson and many other popular characters and places from Astrid Lindgren’s books are always nearby. It is here in the park that the big moments occur, when children can meet, play and get up to mischief with their favourite characters in real life. Here, stories come to life.

A day at Astrid Lindgren’s World

Astrid Lindgren’s World is a living environment, where scenes from Astrid’s stories play out every day. And it doesn’t just have to be on a theatre stage, often you can get much closer than that. Sometimes you can even find yourself at the centre of the action. When the show is over, it’s your turn. Jump in and play in the same places that were stages just moments ago. Climb around with Ronja in Mattis Castle, take a tour of Villa Villekulla with Pippi or go down the slide with the one and only Karlsson on the Roof.

Plan your visit

A world of many worlds

The park is pretty big, 180,000 sq. m, or more than 22 football pitches. There’s plenty of room to play and many shows to see, so we recommend staying for two days. Of course, it is possible to visit the park in one day, but in that case we recommend being there when we open the gates at 10:00.

How long does a visit take?

It is difficult to give a clear answer to how long it takes to visit Astrid Lindgren’s World. We like visits to be on children’s terms. Most people spend two days in the park, but if you’re visiting us for the day, choose a few characters and shows and avoid rushing around trying to do everything.

Sweden’s largest outdoor theatre

During our summer season, nearly 30 different shows are performed every day, and the programme is designed to ensure that there is always something to suit all ages. If you have slightly older children, we recommend seeing the last performances of the day, which are always extra special – with pyrotechnics and cool effects. We particularly recommend seeing ‘The Day of Battle’, ‘Here comes Pippi Longstocking’ and ‘An encounter between beasts!’ for some extra noise and spectacle!

Packing tips from our guests

  • There are no roofs on the stands in the larger venues and on a summer’s day it can get quite hot. So, don’t forget a sun hat/cap and bring your own water bottle to fill up to make sure you can get plenty of water.
  • Bring your own packed lunch and a blanket if you want to sit on the grass. That way a little rest and energy replenishment is never far away. There are several cosy picnic and barbecue areas in the park.
  • Carts are available to rent at the entrance to tow children and luggage. Remember to put all your valuables in a separate bag that is easy to carry. During the performances, you must leave your cart unattended in a special parking space for prams and carts.
  • Feel free to bring a swimsuit/change of clothes if the children want to play in the water.
  • Don’t forget your rainwear! Almost everything is outdoors and the performances don’t stop, not even for pouring rain – and umbrellas are not allowed during the performances.
  • At the entrance, there are yellow bands for children to wear around their wrists with names and phone numbers written on them in case they get lost. Bring your own pen so you don’t have to queue and wait for everyone to finish writing.

Accessibility

Accessibility is about making everyone feel welcome and giving everyone a great experience during their visit. We strive to accommodate as many people as possible and want to provide a good service. Therefore, we are constantly working to make things easier for guests with disabilities. For a few days a year, we also offer sign language interpretation.

From an accessibility perspective, the site has a number of challenging environments. The park is partly hilly, with some areas paved with cobblestones. It is about 1,700 metres around the entire park if you follow the main trail.

Carers or personal assistants A carer or assistant to a guest with a visible or hidden disability can obtain free entry to the park upon presentation of a carer/assistant certificate. The carer will be granted free admission upon presentation of a certificate confirming the need for a carer/extra support. The certificate must state the need for a carer/extra support; just proof of a medical diagnosis is not valid. Approved certificates are issued by health care providers, assistance companies or municipalities.

The certificate must be presented at the ticket office when you arrive at the park, where you can also collect the carer’s ticket. If more than one carer is needed, evidence of this must be presented.

Wheelchairs
We offer a limited number of wheelchairs that our guests are welcome to borrow at no extra charge during the day. Wheelchairs are available from Guest Service. It is possible to pre-book a wheelchair for your visit.

Wheelchair spaces
For most of our performances there are a limited number of specially designated spaces for wheelchair users. Please arrive to the performances in good time so our staff have time to help you find a good place.

Assistance vehicles
Vehicles such as bicycles, electric scooters and kickbikes are not permitted in Astrid Lindgren’s World. If you require the assistance of a vehicle other than a wheelchair or Permobil during your visit, it needs to be documented with a certificate from the health service. We are happy to receive the certificate by email in advance. No vehicles other than wheelchairs and Permobils are permitted without a certificate.

Visiting the park with special assistance vehicles
The park has some hilly terrain and some areas are difficult to navigate. Assistance vehicles must be driven at walking speed and with great care. We do not guarantee spaces at our performances. Pushchairs and other vehicles are not allowed in our audience seating during performances for any reason. If you can walk short distances, we recommend that you park your pushchair or assistance vehicle in the parking area and sit in the regular seats during our performances. Assistance vehicles are not permitted in our restaurants..

Restaurants
All restaurants are accessible for wheelchair users. Do you have food allergies? We cook food to suit the vast majority of our visitors and choose the ingredients we use with that in mind. It is important that all guests feel welcome at Astrid Lindgren’s World and therefore the options for those with allergies are constantly being expanded at our various outlets.

Guide dog(s)
You are welcome to bring guide dogs and service and signalling dogs into our restaurants/outdoor serving areas after informing our staff. Please note that some of the performances feature animals and loud noises.

For those with allergies

We cook food to suit the vast majority of our visitors and choose ingredients with that in mind. For dishes that contain allergens, we try to offer alternatives. It is important that all guests feel welcome at Astrid Lindgren’s World and therefore the options for those with allergies are constantly being expanded at our various food outlets.

Options for those with allergies

The park has a specific member of staff trained to deal with allergies, who is responsible for the overall work of providing options for allergy sufferers. Our staff are trained in allergies and allergens, and they are happy to tell you how to combine dishes to keep you and your children full and happy. However, you know most about your allergy, so please do not hesitate to share your needs with us so that we can find something to suit you.

When ordering food, it is important to inform staff if you have an allergy or intolerance so they can take extra steps to ensure your food is handled without risk of contamination. Often you can easily change the part of a dish that you need to avoid or can’t tolerate, such as getting gravy instead of cream sauce if you can’t tolerate milk protein, or choosing unbreaded fish if you are intolerant to gluten or eggs.

Our cafés have a number of options for gluten-free and dairy-free sandwiches and there are various cakes that are gluten-free, dairy-free and/or egg-free. All our ingredients are listed, so if you want to double-check something to be sure, just ask our staff for help.

If you want energy to play, you need to eat

Days filled with play sometimes require a break to replenish energy supplies. In our restaurants we cook all our food from scratch, in our own kitchens and using almost all local ingredients.

Picnic areas

There are plenty of picnic spots in the park. If you bring your own food, you are welcome to set yourself down in a nice spot to eat. We can especially recommend the Birch Trees below the Tiny, Tiny Town and the Picnic Trail. The trail is next to a pond and has several cosy seating areas.

Barbecue areas

In the park you will also find some proper barbecue areas. These are located in the Mattis Forest by the Mill playground, the Birch Trees and by the Brenda Brave setting. Each barbecue has charcoal and lighter fluid, so you can light a fire yourself.

The meal is part of the experience

Food can become part of a larger story. In Astrid Lindgren’s World, we serve Småland classics so that everyone in the family can appreciate them.

The dishes on our menus have been chosen based on the Småland food tradition and Astrid Lindgren’s stories. We prepare most of the food in our own kitchens with the park’s own chefs.

Småland’s food tradition

When we took the plunge and started cooking all our food from scratch, it was the obvious choice for us to use locally produced ingredients. Partly because we want to offer visitors a genuine and healthy dining experience, but also to support local business and contribute to reducing environmentally harmful transport.

Work with us

If you’re going to be able to play, you need plenty of food

In Astrid Lindgren’s World, there are many places to choose from, both large and small.

Read more about our restaurants

About us

There are about 20 restaurants, cafés and kiosks in the park. Almost 160 people work together to prepare and cook the high-quality food we serve and give our guests a great dining experience.

Crops in the park

Next to one of the park’s restaurants is our kitchen garden. There, our gardeners grow a variety of crops, highlighting the link between ‘soil and table’. Here our chefs harvest rhubarb, beans, asparagus, beets and various spices, according to the growing season. Sometimes, if we have a big harvest, we also have crops for sale.

Meatballs with mashed potatoes

Here in the park, more than 16 tonnes of meatballs are consumed in a season. For us, it is important to ensure the quality and origin of the meat, but also the safety of the production process. Our meatballs are produced at Bjursund’s slaughterhouse, an hour’s drive from Vimmerby. The mince is made using beef from local farms. We only season with salt and pepper and use potatoes to bind the batter.

Almost 1000 litres of pancake batter

Our pancakes are now widely talked about and we have for several years fine-tuned the recipe so that it is really good. No strange additives and of course Swedish eggs in the batter.

We make almost half a million pancakes in one summer in the pancake machine and at the buffet you can choose between our homemade jams and toppings with a cold dollop of cream. This year we also offer our homemade chocolate sauce.

Sign language interpretation

To make our programme accessible to as many people as possible, we introduced sign language interpretation as part of our theatre performances already in 2009. Sign language interpreters are incorporated into certain performances and given costumes, characters and direction so that their participation becomes a natural part of the theatre.

Dates for sign language interpretation

On the given dates, performances will be interpreted in sign language according to a predetermined loop, allowing you to see all the interpreted performances during the day. A special programme is available from the Information Centre just inside the entrance to the park.

Summer season 2023: 16-18 June, 17-19 July and 11-13 August.
