Astrid Lindgren’s World is unlike anywhere else. Here, there is always joy, play and laughter. And Pippi Longstocking, Emil, Karlsson and many other popular characters and places from Astrid Lindgren’s books are always nearby. It is here in the park that the big moments occur, when children can meet, play and get up to mischief with their favourite characters in real life. Here, stories come to life.

A day at Astrid Lindgren’s World

Astrid Lindgren’s World is a living environment, where scenes from Astrid’s stories play out every day. And it doesn’t just have to be on a theatre stage, often you can get much closer than that. Sometimes you can even find yourself at the centre of the action. When the show is over, it’s your turn. Jump in and play in the same places that were stages just moments ago. Climb around with Ronja in Mattis Castle, take a tour of Villa Villekulla with Pippi or go down the slide with the one and only Karlsson on the Roof.

Plan your visit

A world of many worlds

The park is pretty big, 180,000 sq. m, or more than 22 football pitches. There’s plenty of room to play and many shows to see, so we recommend staying for two days. Of course, it is possible to visit the park in one day, but in that case we recommend being there when we open the gates at 10:00.

How long does a visit take?

It is difficult to give a clear answer to how long it takes to visit Astrid Lindgren’s World. We like visits to be on children’s terms. Most people spend two days in the park, but if you’re visiting us for the day, choose a few characters and shows and avoid rushing around trying to do everything.

Sweden’s largest outdoor theatre

During our summer season, nearly 30 different shows are performed every day, and the programme is designed to ensure that there is always something to suit all ages. If you have slightly older children, we recommend seeing the last performances of the day, which are always extra special – with pyrotechnics and cool effects. We particularly recommend seeing ‘The Day of Battle’, ‘Here comes Pippi Longstocking’ and ‘An encounter between beasts!’ for some extra noise and spectacle!

Packing tips from our guests

  • There are no roofs on the stands in the larger venues and on a summer’s day it can get quite hot. So, don’t forget a sun hat/cap and bring your own water bottle to fill up to make sure you can get plenty of water.
  • Bring your own packed lunch and a blanket if you want to sit on the grass. That way a little rest and energy replenishment is never far away. There are several cosy picnic and barbecue areas in the park.
  • Carts are available to rent at the entrance to tow children and luggage. Remember to put all your valuables in a separate bag that is easy to carry. During the performances, you must leave your cart unattended in a special parking space for prams and carts.
  • Feel free to bring a swimsuit/change of clothes if the children want to play in the water.
  • Don’t forget your rainwear! Almost everything is outdoors and the performances don’t stop, not even for pouring rain – and umbrellas are not allowed during the performances.
  • At the entrance, there are yellow bands for children to wear around their wrists with names and phone numbers written on them in case they get lost. Bring your own pen so you don’t have to queue and wait for everyone to finish writing.

The stories are closer than you think

Astrid Lindgren World is located in Vimmerby, Småland – just a stone’s throw from Astrid Lindgren’s childhood home. On the same grounds where Astrid’s father Samuel August once used to farm, you can now meet Emil in Lönneberga, Pippi Longstocking, Ronja the Robber’s daughter and most of the other characters that Astrid Lindgren wrote about.

Travel by train

Travelling by train together is both cosy and climate-smart. During our opening hours, you can take the train directly to our own train station, Astrid Lindgren’s World, which is adjacent to the car park and just 100 metres from the entrance to the park. Welcome to Astrid Lindgren’s Vimmerby in Småland!

Vimmerby is a charming municipality in northern Småland. Here you will encounter the Småland nature, with many forests, lakes, meadows, winding gravel roads and traditional red cottages and barns, just like in an Astrid Lindgren story. That’s because it was here, in Vimmerby, that Astrid Lindgren was born in 1907. Just a few minutes’ walk from Vimmerby square, on Näs farm, you will find Astrid Lindgren’s childhood home. In addition to a guided tour of her childhood home, there are exhibitions you can visit in the Rectory, gardens and the Pavilion.

Much of Vimmerby’s history can be experienced in the alleys and cobbled streets of the old town centre around the square, Storgatan and Båtsmansbacken. The site has been a marketplace since 1604 when Vimmerby regained its town charter from Charles IX. The neighbourhood has since developed into its own vibrant town full of trade, culture and entertainment, which inspired Astrid Lindgren as she wrote many of her stories.

Astrid Lindgren’s Näs

Astrid Lindgren’s Näs is a visitor destination in Vimmerby – in the heart of the surroundings in which Astrid Lindgren grew up. Astrid Anna Emilia was born on 14 November 1907 on the farm Näs. Astrid was the second of four siblings. She and her siblings, together with the cowman’s children and the children from the rectory next door, were the real-life children of Noisy Village. The story of their games has now spread around the world. It was here that she climbed the lemonade tree and played ‘got you’ and ‘don’t touch the floor’ with her siblings. This is where she jumped in the hay and listened to stories in Kristin’s kitchen.

Make a visit to Noisy Village

If you are in Vimmerby, a visit to Sevedstorp is a must. It was this place that inspired Astrid Lindgren when she wrote about the children of Noisy Village. Astrid’s father Samuel August grew up on ‘Middle Farm’ and for a time owned some of the farms in Sevedstorp. In her books, she describes her own childhood in the 1920s. When it came time to remaking the films in 1986, there was no better location than Sevedstorp, the ‘real’ Noisy Village.

To Noisy Village

Småland Film Village

In the Film Village, you can experience the environments from classic children’s films such as Emil in Lönneberga, Seacrow Island and Pippi Longstocking. Step into the world of film in an exhibition created in the spirit of Astrid Lindgren. Here you can see classic studio buildings and original costumes from the films, sing along to the film music, create your own films and experience other interactive environments.

Katthult

Walk around the buildings in Katthult and you will recognise the atmosphere and details from the Emil films. The main building in Katthult, with the flagpole on which Ida was hoisted, is one of the most photographed houses in Sweden. The woodshed is perhaps the heart of Katthult. Here you will find, among other things, Emil’s wooden figures and the stove where he hid his lunch box, which meant that he managed quite well despite sometimes being locked in for long days.

Welcome to Katthult
