Madicken and Lisbet have a picnic at home

Today Madicken comes home from school and is overjoyed. She is going on a school trip on Wednesday! The whole school is taking a train up the mountain to eat sandwiches and look at the view. Oh, how happy she is! But Lisbet is not so happy. She wants to go on a trip too. Being the kind girl she is, Madicken decides to organise her own excursion with Lisbet in Junedale. Although, they don’t have a mountain.

Perhaps it’s possible to climb up on the roof of the woodshed? There’s a good view from up there, but not as good as the birds that fly high above. Imagine if you could fly like a bird. But people can only fly in aeroplanes. Suddenly Madicken remembers what Abbe told her about the war and people jumping out of aeroplanes with only an umbrella. What if it’s possible to make a jump like that from the roof of the woodshed…
